Version 2016.3 of Datakit’s conversion tools extend support to NX™ include assemblies
For the last year, Datakit has provided Siemens™ NX™ format support. Following the enthusiasm generated by this new interface and the requests of its users, Datakit has extended the range of supported data. The interface, which was already able to write parts in NX™ format, with their geometry and their related attributes is now also able to keep wireframe data and to write assemblies.
Thus, users of the standalone converter CrossManager can now convert assemblies coming from various formats (such as CATIA V5™, SOLIDWORKS™ or Creo™) to NX™ format (.prt), keeping their assembly structure and their wireframe. Datakit also provides a plug-in for SOLIDWORKS™ which benefits from these enhancements. This plug-in enables to add to SOLIDWORKS the ability to export the open part or assembly in NX™ format (.prt).

These improvements are also available in CrossCad/Ware, an API enabling software vendors to integrate Datakit technology in their own application. They are thus able to export NX™ assemblies from their software.

MeshGems 2.3 version update
The most noticeable new features are the following :
MeshGems Infrastructure
- New Features
- Thread safety of the whole MeshGems suite: the MeshGems library can now be used in a multi-thread calling environment. This means you can have simultaneous meshing sessions, organize your own parallel scheduling, and so forth.
Surface Meshing – MeshGems-CADSurf
- New Features
- Possibility to specify required quadrilaterals to be preserved in the generated mesh when meshing on a discrete CAD.
- Chordal error control supported when using the anisotropic metric mode.
- Improvements
- Full re-design of the triangular mesher, providing more reliability, speed, memory efficiency and better meshes around local parametrization degeneracies (see picture below). It also makes future evolutions much easier. NB: the generated meshes may look slightly different.
Mesh processing – MeshGems-SurfOpt & Cleaner
- New Features
- MG-SurfOpt and MG-Cleaner: new parameters to respectively disable edge swaps and detach single contacts between two surfaces.
- Improvements
- MeshGems-Cleaner: better volume detection.
Volume Meshing – MeshGems-Hybrid
- New Features
- Boundary layer imprinting on symmetry planes or planar inlets/outlets.
- Improvements
- Better treatment of the proximity between opposite surfaces for the generation of pyramids: it leads to better mesh qualities in thin regions when using a cartesian core. The subdomains or holes are now better taken into account.
- Computation of the boundary layer vertices in complex corner situations substantially improved.
Volume Meshing – MeshGems-Hexa
- New Features
- Ability to specify the boundary layer parameters on a tag per tag basis.

Distene and MeshGems recognized as a French "Tech Gem"
Mark Loriot, President of Distene, was invited as a speaker at the annual Ceremony for the first anniversary of the “New Industrial France”, which took place at the Presidential Palace, l’Elysée, in presence of President F. Hollande and Economy Minister E. Macron. He promoted the excellence of some initiatives in the French research ecosystem as a basis of industrial innovation and success.

MeshGems awarded EcoSystem Prize
The Ecosystem Prize was awarded to Distene and its MeshGems Suite of Meshing Software Components at the 11th Systematic Annual Convention.
The MeshGems technologies aim at optimizing the link between CAD and the simulation-based design Industry. It targets more especially the CAD/CAE software developers. Integrated by more than 60 CAD/CAE software vendors such as ANSYS, Autodesk, CST, Dassault Systemes, LSTC, MSC.Software, Siemens PLM, and many others, MeshGems has established itself as the market leader in the world. Most CAE engineers the industry certainly already use this technology without even being aware of it. As a result of several Systematiccollaborative projects, this innovation, which is “born from Inria“, was embedded into in-house applications of some major industrial companies, members of the Systematic Cluster.
With this Ecosystem Prize, it is more than 1,000 participants who rewarded MeshGems. They put thus the spotlight on this reference technology, which is by essence unknown because “hidden” into the CAD/CAE software products embedding it. With MeshGems, it is the “French Tech Inside” which is rewarded.

Building A Banked Track Is A Balancing Act
Mitchell Machine Works is well known for its Magic Carpet, a hydraulically driven roller system that can roll up, or roll out, an entire sports field of turf in a matter of minutes. Because of this they were given the opportunity to build an indoor oval running track using flat as well as banked surfaces.
To transform this problem into something manageable, Mitchell looked to IronCAD. Mitchell was able to create a CAD model using IronCAD that gave him insight into how the hydraulic system worked. Mitchell could measure how much each hydraulic cylinder would move at different points along its path as it was raised and lowered.
